BRENHAM ISD CONFIRMS TWO MORE COVID-19 CASES; SEVEN TOTAL, TWO ACTIVE

BRENHAM ELEMENTARY STUDENT, HIGH SCHOOL STAFF MEMBER TEST POSITIVE

Brenham ISD confirmed two additional cases of COVID-19 this week, the only two cases currently active within the district.

Brenham ISD COVID-19 Response Leader Jamie Woodall said the district was notified of the positive cases Tuesday and Wednesday.  Tuesday’s case was reported in a Brenham Elementary School student who was last on campus October 9th, while Wednesday’s was in a Brenham High School staff member who was last present on campus the same day.

According to Woodall, case investigation found no close contact with the staff member, but the elementary student had close contact with 11 other students, who are all now in quarantine.  Woodall stated that not all of the close contact occurred at school, as some of the interaction between the students happened off-campus.

Woodall said it is harder to mitigate close contact with younger age groups, as they are not required to wear masks per the district’s COVID-19 prevention plan.  She said overall instances of close contact have been low within the district thus far, and attributed that to students and employees remaining diligent about socially distancing and wearing masks.  She said she remains “very confident” in how the district is handling its COVID-19 response.

Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 cannot return to school until ten days after the onset of symptoms and 24 hours after fever and symptoms have resolved.  Anyone who is found to have had close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual will be notified by phone, and will be required to remain off campus for 14 days.

The district has confirmed a total of seven coronavirus cases since September 22nd, when it reported its first case in a Brenham High School student.  A total of four students and three staff members have tested positive thus far.
