FORMER GERMANIA PRESIDENT EDWIN SCHMID DIES

The former longtime president of Germania Insurance has died.
Edwin Schmid died Sunday in College Station at the age of 93.
Schmid began his tenure with Germania Mutual Aid Association in 1947 as a bookkeeper. He was appointed to assistant secretary/treasurer of the company in 1960 before being elected as second vice president in 1969. In 1973, he became the president of Germania Insurance, serving as president for 27 years before retiring in 2000.
Schmid also served in the Army in the Korean War and was active in the community, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Washington County State Bank, member of the Finance Committee at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Election Judge Chairman, member of the Founding Board of Directors for Animal Friends Clinic of Washington County, and a Scott and White donor.
Germania President and CEO Paul Ehlert said Schmid “played a major role in shaping Germania into the strong company it is today.” He said, “The core values Edwin instilled in employees during his time in leadership remain at the heart of our company.”
Visitation will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brenham, with burial following at Prairie Lea Cemetery.
