LASER ROAD SURFACE TESTER TO BEGIN COLLECTING ROAD DATA FOR CITY OF BRENHAM

Starting next week, Brenham residents may notice a different kind of van traveling around town in neighborhoods and parks.

That van, according to the City of Brenham, is known as a Laser Road Surface Tester (LRST), and it will be measuring and performing analysis of the city’s street pavement roughness, rutting, cracking, and sidewalk conditions, while also collecting right-of-way data.  The van will be in town for two to three days.

The city has contracted with Infrastructure Management Services (IMS) to use their technology to collect data regarding road conditions within city limits.  The city hopes to use this data to be proactive and prevent issues before they begin.

The van comes equipped with a GPS and four digital video cameras with lasers that span 12 feet.

Assistant City Manager Donald Reese says this assessment will help the city “prioritize projects and know how to allocate funds.”  He says while visual inspections can only do so much, this technology will allow city officials to “see every crack in the road even when they are invisible to the naked eye.”

Drivers who see the IMS van on the road or get behind it as it is collecting data are asked to be patient.  Anyone with questions or concerns can call the city at 979-337-7400.
