CITY COUNCIL – COUNTY COMMISSIONERS HOLD JOINT WORKSHOP

The Brenham City Council and the Washington County Commissioners Court held a joint workshop meeting this (Thursday) morning at the Barnhill Center, to hear a presentation from TxDOT on the 5 concepts for the improvement of the Highway 290 / 36 interchange.  After a review of the different concepts, most of the people attending the meeting were in favor of concept B, the Direct Connect concept.  Brett Smith, owner of Lone Star Southern Grill, Westwood Cinema, Horseshoe Junction, and the person who’s property is most impacted by any of the concepts, said he is in favor of the Direct Connect concept.  Several of the attendees said TxDOT needs to look at providing an overpass at North Berlin Road, due to the increasing traffic there.  There was also some discussion of extending Westwood Lane all the way to Old Mill Creek Road.  City Manager James Fisher said the city and county would have to get involved, but they would likely look at it.

Brenham City Council will again discuss the matter at their meeting this (Thursday) afternoon, and County Commissioners are scheduled to discuss the matter at their meeting next Tuesday.  The Highway 290 / 36 interchange, known locally as the cloverleaf, is one of the most heavily traveled roadways in the county.  Construction on the improved design is scheduled to begin in 2026.

Most people who were at the meeting were in favor of concept B, the Direct Connection route.
