BRENHAM FIRE OFFICIALS URGE SAFETY WITH FIREWORKS FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE

With New Year’s Eve quickly approaching, local residents are reminded to be careful when setting off fireworks.

There is currently no burn ban in Washington County, and while heavy rain is expected today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday), the recent dry conditions beg caution in order to avoid catching grass on fire.

Brenham Fire Department Apparatus Operator Jeff Paul spoke Tuesday on the KWHI Community Corner, saying anyone in the county looking to use fireworks should plan ahead.

Brenham city ordinance prohibits the possession or use of fireworks within the city or its territorial jurisdiction, which extends outside city limits for a distance of 5,000 feet.

Paul said being mindful of others is critical when using fireworks.

Residents should always read and follow the directions given on the label of fireworks, and should not attempt to make their own.  They should always have a water source on hand, not light fireworks close to themselves, and supervise any children that are using fireworks.

In case of an accident or emergency, call 911 or the Brenham Fire Department at 979-337-7300.
