U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul condemned the actions of protestors who stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress attempted to tally and confirm the Electoral College votes Wednesday.

Taking to social media, McCaul posted a video while he remained in lockdown in his office as protestors entered the Capitol building, saying they had resorted to violence and that Capitol police had been personally attacked.  He said “this violence cannot stand, it has to stop.”

McCaul also posted that while he and others had hoped for a different result in the 2020 election, “violence and destruction is not the way to express your grievances.”  He called the situation “disgraceful” and “an assault on our democracy.”

McCaul later said that anyone who breached the Capitol or participated in the violence “should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Four people have died, while at least 52 have been arrested and 14 DC Police officers have been injured after Wednesday’s demonstrations.

Congress affirmed the results of the presidential election early this (Thursday) morning, tallying 306-232 and confirming a victory for Joe Biden.

Wednesday afternoon, McCaul issued a statement ahead of his vote to certify the Electoral College results, saying he would not object to them.  He said, “If Congress chooses to ignore or second-guess the electoral votes cast by the States, it will set a dangerous precedent that could call into question the very institution of our democracy.”
