Several issues are on the docket for State Senator Lois Kolkhorst as she prepares to meet with other lawmakers for the next legislative session.
With the 87th Legislature beginning Tuesday, Kolkhorst says there will be much to address in an environment unlike that of any previous session.
Kolkhorst says there will be three major topics facing lawmakers starting next week.
Kolkhorst has already filed essential caregiver legislation in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, and hopes to address the ability to gather data and accurate information on positivity rates and hospital capacity. She is also looking to see what can be done with the state’s checks and balances system, pertaining to the parameters for declaring a natural disaster.
Kolkhorst believes Texas has the opportunity to lead the charge for COVID-19 recovery across the nation.
Other key issues for Kolkhorst will be eminent domain reform and rural broadband access. She also wants to continue progress made in the past legislative session on education.
Kolkhorst retained her position as State Senator of District 18 after defeating Democrat challenger Michael Antalan in 2020’s general election. She was first elected to the senate seat in 2014 after seven terms in the Texas House. Her district serves all of Aransas, Austin, Burleson, Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca, Lee, Matagorda, Refugio, Victoria, Waller, Washington and Wharton counties, the western portions of Fort Bend and Harris counties, and an eastern precinct of Nueces County.
