WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS TO CONSIDER NAME CHANGE, POLICY UPDATES FOR FAIRGROUNDS

After cancelling their previous Tuesday meeting due to the lack of a quorum and holding a brief meeting Friday to approve accounts payable, Washington County Commissioners are scheduled to meet again Tuesday.

Commissioners will consider changing the name of the Washington County Fairgrounds to the Washington County Expo.  They will also consider approving a new logo for the facility and updates to its rental policy and price guide.

Fairgrounds Director Harrison Williams said the change is being made because there has been confusion on the difference between the Washington County Fairgrounds and the Washington County Fair Association.  As the facility and county fair are run by separate organizations, an effort to rebrand the facility began in August.  He hopes a new name, new logo, and new website will help alleviate confusion.

Williams said changes are being made to the policy guide to avoid miscommunication and streamline the rental process, as staff have previously spent lengthy amounts of time going over rules and requirements with individual renters.

The price guide is being changed because, according to Williams, it had not been updated since 2016 and had some extraneous fees that were no longer needed.  He said the price structure has been simplified and prices have been reassessed to make sure the facility is “staying competitive in the market.”

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners will consider an order establishing a public hearing on a petition calling a bond election for the Pecan Glen Road District.  The road district was approved by commissioners at their meeting December 22nd.

Commissioners will also:

  • Consider a 60 day extension of 29 excess vacation hours for Steven Smith with the Washington County Expo Department.
  • Consider approval of the investment policy for 2021 with no changes being made.
  • Discuss renewal of a bond for Reserve Deputy Sheriff Steve Westbrook.
  • Hear a presentation of the Washington County Expo monthly report.

Commissioners will meet Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Washington County Courthouse Annex.

  1. Anybody else notice that the start of the article says the commissioners will CONSIDER the name change of the Washington County Fairgrounds. But at the end of the article they are already calling the fairgrounds “The Washington County Expo”. Sounds like there’s not much to consider…

    1. If they say it’s two different organizations then. Why don’t the Washington county fair association buy there own land or move it somewhere else. I bet that would stir the up some good stuff.
How much money will have the be spent to change everything? New signs on the grounds and everything thing else.

Big question is what they going to do with the old county barn
