FACEMASK FOUND ON REESE LOCKETT STATUE

The statue of a prominent historical figure in Brenham is donning a new look.
Earlier this week, someone put a facemask on the Reese Lockett statue between North Park Street and North Austin Parkway. The mask was still on the statue as of this (Wednesday) morning.
Brenham Mayor Milton Tate said he will talk with Brenham Police Chief Ron Parker to go over the situation and discuss what should be done with the mask. While it will most likely be taken off, Tate said it serves as a good reminder to the public.
Lockett, who lived from 1896 to 1977, was a civic leader in Brenham, as well as a cowboy, rodeo performer and merchant. He served as mayor of Brenham for 28 years, and helped organize the Texas Prison Rodeo at Huntsville and the Houston Fat Stock Show. He also served as trail boss of the Salt Grass Trail Ride from 1952 to 1969. In addition, he served as president of the Brenham Maifest Association and Chamber of Commerce, and was a board member for Blinn College.
The statue in Lockett’s honor was installed in 2001.
