FACEMASK FOUND ON REESE LOCKETT STATUE

The statue of a prominent historical figure in Brenham is donning a new look.

Earlier this week, someone put a facemask on the Reese Lockett statue between North Park Street and North Austin Parkway.  The mask was still on the statue as of this (Wednesday) morning.

Brenham Mayor Milton Tate said he will talk with Brenham Police Chief Ron Parker to go over the situation and discuss what should be done with the mask.  While it will most likely be taken off, Tate said it serves as a good reminder to the public.

Lockett, who lived from 1896 to 1977, was a civic leader in Brenham, as well as a cowboy, rodeo performer and merchant.  He served as mayor of Brenham for 28 years, and helped organize the Texas Prison Rodeo at Huntsville and the Houston Fat Stock Show.  He also served as trail boss of the Salt Grass Trail Ride from 1952 to 1969.  In addition, he served as president of the Brenham Maifest Association and Chamber of Commerce, and was a board member for Blinn College.

The statue in Lockett’s honor was installed in 2001.

  1. I totally agree with every word of BIB’s. But I’d have to just add what I feel that he would’ve said about what y’all city people on the of who yells the most, should do what he would’ve wanted b/c as you beautifully described him as an amazing leader and great role model (Whom I had the pleasure to meet) shows plainly his character. So he’d say leave it as he’d like to remind everyone to wear theirs and the city should replace it when it wears out….that’s if the mayor wants the masks worn around town ….that if
