A book-sharing movement continues to expand in Brenham.

Little Free Libraries were installed earlier this week at Hattie Mae Flowers, Jackson Street and Jerry Wilson Parks.  Little Free Libraries act as neighborhood book exchanges, inviting the public to either take or leave a book.

City of Brenham Community Services Specialist Crystal Locke says the program makes books more accessible for readers of all ages.

The new libraries come after Suzy Hankins, co-owner of Ant Street Inn and a member of the Fortnightly Club of Brenham, approached city staff last year about expanding the Little Free Library program in Brenham by adding them to the park system.

A donor supplied the materials for and built the Little Free Libraries for the parks, while Parks and Recreation staff installed them.  The city will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of the libraries, while the Fortnightly Club will supply books of varying genres and age ranges.  Remaining costs are handled using proceeds from the Fortnightly Club’s Brenham Book Fest, held annually in September.

Locke hopes to eventually expand the program to each of Brenham’s parks, and says any residents or businesses who are looking to get involved can participate in a sponsorship program, providing money or other resources to build the libraries.
