SEN. KOLKHORST SURVEYS CRISIS AT TEXAS-MEXICO BORDER

State Senator Lois Kolkhorst is calling upon the federal government to reverse decisions that she says have led to a “catastrophe” at the Texas-Mexico border.

On Monday, Kolkhorst joined five other Texas senators to survey the challenges facing the state due to a surge of migrants fleeing to the border.  She and other Texas lawmakers have expressed concern about the recent mass migration, following the repeal of several executive orders issued by former President Donald Trump.

Kolkhorst encouraged President Joe Biden to reenact Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, saying “this crisis was created in Washington D.C. and it can be solved in Washington D.C.”

The “Remain in Mexico” program, also known as the “Migrant Protection Protocols,” sent asylum seekers to wait in Mexico border towns for their hearings in American courtrooms.  Over 70,000 migrants have been placed into the program since late 2018.

Accompanied by DPS Director Steven McCraw, Kolkhorst and other senators first visited the Carrizo Springs Youth Processing Center, before taking a helicopter for aerial surveillance of the Rio Grande.  Lawmakers also met personally with Austin Skero, Chief Patrol Agent of the U.S. Border Patrol for the Del Rio Sector.  Consisting of 47 counties, the Del Rio Sector is currently the second-most prolific crossing in the United States, behind the neighboring Rio Grande Sector which includes 19 counties.

Kolkhorst said the state will continue to provide resources and manpower to assist through DPS, but the state has limited authority regarding immigration.  She said the federal government has “failed,” leading to a “difficult and avoidable situation that will tragically cost human lives, strain our healthcare system, and cost taxpayers billions of dollars.”

  1. Kolkhorst and Leman introduced state law that circumvent federal gun laws, why can’t they do the same to protect Texas residents and build a wall on the Texas border. I would donate money as many would.

    1. Actually they introduced a bill to uphold the Constitution which the federal government is trying to circumvent. But your point about Texas taking care of our own border makes sense.
