The state’s temporary waiver on expiration dates for expired licenses and certain vehicle title and registration requirements expires at 11:59 p.m. tonight.

The waiver was put into effect last March by Governor Greg Abbott in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the closing of DPS offices.

Licenses affected by the waiver include DLs, commercial DLs, commercial learner permits, ID cards and election identification certificates that expired on or after March 13, 2020.

Drivers who need to renew are urged to make an appointment or renew online as soon as possible.

Drivers whose registrations expired in or after July 2020 can renew them online.  If they expired before last July, they will need to be renewed in person at a county tax assessor-collector’s office.  A passing inspection is needed for registration renewals.

Anyone with an expired license who is unable to schedule an appointment until after today can request a temporary license that can be used until the date of their appointment.

License information is available at www.dps.texas.gov, while registration information can be found at www.TxDMV.gov.
