LAST DAY OF EARLY VOTING FOR CITY, SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS

Early voting wraps up today (Tuesday) for the City of Brenham, Brenham School Board and Burton School Board elections.

The Washington County Courthouse Annex will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the Brenham elections, while the Burton ISD Administrative Office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Burton election.

According to Washington County Clerk Beth Rothermel, 253 early votes were cast Monday in the Brenham School Board election, while 173 voters cast ballots in the Brenham City Council election.  Both totals are the highest seen during early voting thus far.

Through six days of early voting, 1,151 voters have participated in the Brenham ISD election out of a total of 20,830 registered voters.  For the City of Brenham election, 716 of a total of 8,938 registered voters have voted early.

Rothermel said at today’s Washington County Commissioners meeting that she has been “disappointed” in the low voting turnout, saying she feels that the amount of contested races and talk in the community has not translated into activity at the polls.

So far, for the Pecan Glen Road District bond election, 49 of 87 registered voters have cast ballots, with three people voting on Monday.

Meanwhile for Burton ISD, 49 people have voted early in the school board election, with 12 voting on Monday.

The contested races for the Brenham School Board include Board Vice President Melvin Ehlert against challengers Christine Giese and Jared Krenek, while incumbent Tommie Sullivan faces Michelle Walbeck.  Board President Natalie Lange is unopposed.

The Brenham City Council races feature Ward One incumbent Keith Herring facing Shannan Canales, At-Large Position 5 incumbent Clint Kolby against Allan Colvin, and At-Large Position 6 candidates Leah Cook and Albert Buchanan.  Atwood Kenjura is running unopposed for the Ward 3 council seat.

Three candidates are running for the two at-large positions up for election on the Burton School Board: incumbent David Warner, Sr., Boris Jumper, Sr., and Brian Hinze.

Election Day is Saturday.
