BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO RETURN TO 1 P.M. MEETINGS

The Brenham City Council’s decision to move back the start time of its regular meetings was a short-lived one.

The council on Thursday was set to formalize a move to 3:30 p.m. meetings after proposing the change at its meeting on May 6th, but after discussion, councilmembers opted to continue meeting at 1 p.m. as before, taking no action on amending the time.

During discussion of the item, Councilmember Adonna Saunders suggested the council meet closer to lunch or first thing in the morning, and offered a time of 8:30 a.m.  She said a time of 3:30 p.m. did not make sense because it is not close enough to lunch or the end of work for the public to make time to come to meetings.

Councilmember Clint Kolby stated that 8:30 a.m. would be his preferred time, saying it would allow enough time after the meeting to continue normal day-to-day activities.  He said he was also fine with returning to 1 p.m.

Councilmember Shannan Canales said a meeting time of 1 or 3:30 p.m. would be best for her schedule.  Councilmember Atwood Kenjura also voiced approval for a 3:30 p.m. time, and said 8:30 a.m. would not give the working public an opportunity to attend.

Councilmember Albert Wright asked the council whether its intent of changing the meeting time was to help with public attendance or to better convenience the councilmembers.  He said he understood the change was to aid the public, not his personal agenda, and that it may take time to work through this.  He said he will make plans to attend whenever meetings are scheduled.

Councilmember Leah Cook was not present at the meeting to give her input, but she did say on May 6th that meeting in the middle of the day is difficult.

  1. Well, well, well….the truth finally comes out. The city council members don’t want to be inconvenienced by having meetings that best suit the citizens who voted them in, but rather holding the meetings that best suit THEIR schedules. Are any of you really surprised?? Meetings should be at 5:30pm so anyone who wants to attend, can. After all, they work for us, so why don’t the citizens have a say?

  2. It seems to me that the comments you saw from the council members reflected what was “best” for them, not what was “best” for the community. It would seem to me that conducting the meeting when it is “best” for the public would be the most prudent course of action.

  3. Hahahahahahaha.
What a difference. Off to a great start y’all.
    So much change, so quickly!
1pm is a terrible time for a meeting. The first thing after lunch is not a good time for anything.
Have the meetings in the morning, during the lunch hour
(so the regularly employed can come and participate), or in the evening so that everyone can if they wish.
Having a 1pm meeting is not going to get anyone to show up. The schedule should work around the citizens majority, not the council. The council is supposed to be employed by the people.
It is not like it is an everyday meeting. If the council needs to stay late once in a while, or take a late lunch, so be it.
It is part of the job you were voted in for.
