BAYLOR SCOTT AND WHITE ACQUIRING MEDICAL ARTS DRUG CO.

After over 60 years, ownership of a longtime pharmacy in Brenham is moving outside of the family.

Baylor Scott and White is acquiring Medical Arts Drug Company effective July 1st.  Between current owner Gary Sonnenburg and original proprietor Waldie Sonnenburg, the pharmacy has been family-owned since its start in 1955.

Gary Sonnenburg, who became owner of the pharmacy after his father’s retirement in 1987, said timing was a key factor in this decision, and believes Baylor Scott and White and Medical Arts fit well with one another.

The pharmacy was originally located on the downtown square at 101 South Baylor Street.  It settled into its current location at 207 East Academy Street in 1995.

Sonnenburg is thankful for the many years of loyalty from patients.

Sonnenburg said he does not foresee much of a change in how the pharmacy currently operates.  He said he will continue working full-time with Baylor Scott and White “for a good while,” and that the “vast majority” of Medical Arts’ employees will also stay on.
