GOV. ABBOTT SIGNS BILL ALLOWING CARRY OF HANDGUNS WITHOUT PERMIT
Texans over 21 will no longer need a license or training to carry a handgun in public starting September 1st.
On Wednesday, Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1927, which allows anyone who is legally able to possess a firearm in Texas to openly carry a handgun without a permit.
Supporters say the legislation, which is often referred to as “constitutional carry,” protects the Second Amendment rights of citizens. Opponents argue the move could lead to increased gun violence.
Last month, legislators compromised on a final version of the bill, which includes amendments for increased criminal penalties for felons and family violence offenders who are caught illegally in possession of a weapon. The bill also has a provision that allows officers to disarm a person at any time for the officer’s safety. It also directs the Texas Department of Public Safety to create a free online course on gun safety.
Texas now joins nearly two dozen other states with similar gun laws.
