BRENHAM ISD NAMED ‘BEST OF THE BUNCH’ IN TDA SPRING FARM FRESH CHALLENGE
Brenham ISD’s Child Nutrition Department has received statewide recognition in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA) Spring Farm Fresh Challenge.
The district received the “Best of the Bunch” award after joining schools and childcare providers across the state to Eat Local, Teach Local and Be Social from April 12th through May 14th. This is the highest award tier available to districts in Texas.
As part of the challenge, children at Brenham ISD ate local foods and learned about Texas agriculture, while staff shared their success on social media. The challenge is part of Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller’s Farm Fresh Initiative created to connect farmers and ranchers with operators of nutrition programs administered by TDA.
To receive the “Best of the Bunch” award, districts had to serve three or more Texas foods from three different food groups at least once a week in April, lead an education activity and showcase the activity on social media.
Miller said the Farm Fresh Challenge “plays a critical role in connecting Texas farmers and ranchers directly with school children, child care providers, and local communities.”
Brenham ISD Child Nutrition Director Kasandra Davis said the district is honored to receive this award for the first time ever, and will “continue to serve Texas sourced products as often as possible on our menus throughout the school year.”
Brenham ISD currently offers free summer grab-and-go meals for all children 18 and under until July 29th from 11 a.m. to noon in front of Brenham High School.
