FOR THE CITY HOLDS BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLY MARKET

OVER 1,600 STUDENTS SERVED DURING EVENT

A Washington County nonprofit helped hundreds of local students prepare for the upcoming school year by giving out free school supplies.

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin (left) was among numerous volunteers handing out supplies to families during For The City's school supply market Saturday.

For The City held its fourth annual school supply market on Saturday at the Brenham Community Education Building.  Dozens of volunteers handed out bags of assorted supplies to students and their families based on grade level.

The organization met its goal this year of benefitting over 1,600 students, who received approximately $55,000 in school supplies.

The public’s response showed For The City President Tori Bryan that many families need help as students return to class, and she says she is happy to help serve that need.

Bryan says this event was made successful by the people of Washington County banding together for local youth.

Of the over 1,600 students who received aid during the supply drive, roughly 220 are incoming prekindergarten students at the Brenham Early Childhood Learning Center, while approximately 200 students attend Burton schools.  Supplies were sent to Burton ISD to be distributed by their campus principals at a later date.

For The City served over 1,600 students during this year's supply market.

  1. Why can’t everybody gets free school supplies!! Wish my kids could get free supplies. I have to buy mine and I guess I paying for the free one to Come on people let’s stop giving away free supplies or anything to people. Wake up

    1. 1,600 students received aid that’s about 25% of the student population and you are mad about 1/4 kids getting help? You need to wake up. Times were hard last year for lots of people and for some it didn’t get better. I’m glad some student can now come to school prepared!

    2. You could have gotten free supplies too if you would have made the decision to go where they were being handed out. It was community wide. First come; first serve. Don’t be so quick to judge those that got what you could have very easily gotten yourself.

    3. Actually, how about some free supplies for teachers? Athletics and administration gets everything it needs and then some, but then teachers get an allocation of supplies but often have to dip into their own pockets for extras when they are trying to do better than the “minimum required.”

      1. This was the vision of one person, who blessed the communities of Brenham and Burton.
The doors were opened on Thursday for teachers to come and obtain extra supplies they had leftover from the student bags.
Saturday the doors were open to ANY one who wanted to come and be blessed.
Thank you, Tori Bryant for your vision!

      2. True! This is just the result of a “top heavy” school district that turns the education of our children into a joke! The majority of the $$$ goes to those who never interact with nor educate the students. The school board is implicit in this failed educational experiment and will do NOTHING to change ANYTHING. They promote theories but have no intelligent idea how to actually educate students. Those who have dedicated themselves to the profession of teaching do, in fact, know how to educate students! Unfortunately, teachers are on the bottom of the totem pole in regard to pay, incentives and public appreciation. Beyond politics this is the easiest fraud to perpetrate on the unsuspecting public. It’s next to a crime the way our students, parents, teachers and taxpayers are being bamboozled and ripped off! Every property owner pays BISD taxes even if they have no children in the district. Voting alone will not solve this problem. People lie to get elected! It will take radical community effort to turn the tide on this travesty or we can just live with it and stop complaining!

      3. They were able to donate the supplies they had left that they could not turn into the supplies bags for the kids, to the teachers. It was an event that happened 8/5-8/6 to all Washington County teachers. Also teachers have started creating Amazon wish lists for all the extras they need and sharing it with family and friends. Myself and a ton of other people I know donate to teachers because we do know that they go above and beyond for our students.
