HISTORIC STEAM ENGINE STOPS IN BRAZOS VALLEY

Hundreds of residents had the opportunity today (Monday) to see a piece of history come roaring through the area.

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s only operating Big Boy locomotive, made a stop this morning in Navasota.

The historic steam engine stopped at the intersection of McAlpine and Railroad Streets for public viewing before heading to Hempstead, where it could be seen at the Wilkins Street crossing.

After leaving Hempstead, the train departed for Houston, where it will be on display tomorrow (Tuesday) before traveling through East Texas and eventually Louisiana.

The train is in the middle of a five-week, ten-state tour with stops in over 90 communities.  It last came to the region in 2019 as part of the 150th anniversary celebration of the transcontinental railroad’s completion.

The train’s full schedule can be seen at www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule.  You can also see a video of the train's arrival in Navasota below.
