People across the Brazos Valley made a difference in the lives of families in need on Wednesday by contributing to the Food for Families Food Drive, hosted by the Brazos Valley Food Bank and KBTX.

More than 110,000 pounds of food was collected at seven donation sites around the region, while over $290,000 has been raised in donations.

This year marked the first time in the event’s 26-year history that Washington County had a donation site, which was located at the Washington County Expo Food Court.  According to Brazos Valley Food Bank board member Carl Prihoda, Washington County collected 16,635 pounds of food and has raised $16,500.

Prihoda said the event can only grow from here.

Prihoda said it took about six years of pushing to include Washington County as a donation location, followed by a brisk four to six weeks of organizing the food drive and gathering volunteers.  He said this will be an annual event for Washington County moving forward.

In addition to Brenham, donations were collected in Bryan, Caldwell, Franklin, Hearne, Madisonville and Navasota.  All donations stay in the county they were donated in.

Donations can still be made to the food bank.  To learn more, visit www.bvfb.org.
