YEAGER NO LONGER VOLLEYBALL COACH AT BRENHAM HIGH SCHOOL
UPDATE@4:24PM:
In a statement released to KWHI this afternoon, Brenham ISD said “Coach Yeager continues to be a valued member of the Brenham ISD teaching staff, but will no longer be the head coach of the volleyball program.”
The statement also said, “We appreciate her years of service to our student-athletes and will post the position in the next few days to identify the next person to lead our BHS volleyball program.”
ORIGINAL STORY@12:13PM:
KWHI News has heard from numerous sources that long time Brenham Cubette Volleyball Head Coach Debbie Yeager is no longer heading the program.
KWHI reached out to new Athletic Director Danny Youngs, who said that the BISD Communications Director would be in touch.
BISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin said that they hope to release a statement on the matter later this afternoon.
We have also reached out to Coach Yeager for comment on the situation, but have not heard back.
Yeager had been with Brenham ISD since 2000, when her husband David was hired as the school superintendent.
Yeager took the Cubettes to the State Tournament for the first time in 2004. They lost in the semi-finals to eventual state champion Lewisville Hebron. They finished the season with a 32-9 record.
Her best season came in 2009, when she guided Brenham to a 41-6 overall record and an appearance in the State Championship Game against Canyon Randall.
She then took them back to the State Championship Game the following year in 2010. They lost to Austin Lake Travis in the finals, and finished with a 37-11 record.
This past season, under Yeager, the Cubettes finished 30-14 overall, and were tied for second place in district with a 12-4 record.
They made it to the Area round of the playoffs, before losing to Pflugerville Hendrickson.
SHE WAS BRILLIANT AT WHAT SHE DID
This woman was the best coach I have ever had. Simply put, it was a privilege to have this woman in my life. She brought out the very best in me, a level of competitive play not even I was aware I had. I still remember how hard we were pushed, the workouts, the drills the practices in the sweat box…mostly the sense of pride WE FELT when we accomplished what goals we had for ourselves. It wasn’t easy, but we did it. I use use this mentality in life every single day. “Life is tuff. But so are we.” “What can you make yourself do” “PUSH!” She lives for this sport and she not only makes winners on the court, but she lights this fire within us all…this sense of believing in yourself and knowing that no matter what happens in life, you will prevail, you are enough. These girls need this more than ever, they also need someone to be tuff, someone that won’t accept anything less than 100%.
I love you Coach.

Sad day. BHS is crumbling to pieces as if it wasn’t already. Kids these days are so soft and god forbid a coach yells, punishes, or etc. Sorry to all the kids that think Yeager was so “horrible” to them, when it reality you were just babied as a child. You would not have made it 7-15 years ago back when all the coaching staff was TOUGH. That was probably the most successful years in sports for BHS. Those coaches CARED. They taught us hard work, perseverance, mental toughness, and what being in the real world is like where everything WON’T go your way but you still have to push through it. It’s harsh but clearly definitely needed. I thank god I had the coaches I did and thank god I graduated within the years. Good luck BHS with your participation trophies ?
I couldn’t agree more with this post. Coach Yeager is a big part of why I have been successful, not just in sports but in life. This is such disturbing news. To have someone who clearly has no idea the history of Brenham Volleyball roll in and destroy what has been built is heartbreaking. Pressure from parents because their “baby” isn’t getting playing time or can’t handle coaching is what’s wrong with our society today. I am a former Brenham High School athlete. I don’t need to hide behind that label. I’m more than happy to sign my name. Look it up. Haley Long. Debbie you are amazing, never forget it.
Many former and I’m sure current Brenham high school volleyball players and their families are smiling right now. If you know you know. This has has been an ongoing issue in BHS and a long time coming. I have never experienced so much hate and negativity in my life. She made me and many others walk away from a sport we truly loved and lose confidence in ourselves at such a vulnerable age. I was a part of the BHS volleyball community and had many friends in it as well. I, along with many of my friends quit volleyball because of her. The way I was treated in this program literally still affects me to this day many years later. My friends and I all agree she played favorites for those “valued” in the Brenham society and others who had actual talent were ignored. I truly hope Brenham brings on a new coach who empowers these young girls to believe in theirselves because I was not given that. I hope they are judged based on their actual talent and not their last name. It’s sad when you have other coaches and teachers at BHS leaving and telling players and families they have experienced the same things with her. This is and has been a known issue in the community. Hopeful for a new start for Brenham.
Loving it and being a great player is 2 different things
I respectfully disagree. As someone who is a state medalist herself (not Brenham), we had to have some live of the game and be good in order to get to state.
I’ve yet to see a team get to state without both, and if you have a too aggressive coach that takes away the joy even if you’re good – and I’ve seen a few, including Yeager at times, then your team suffers.
And in the case of the OP as a spectator, I saw players one day snd not the next. Asked friends, and they said “she’s good, but she lost the joy of playing.”
Tough doesn’t mean harsh, which I think is what may be leading to this decision.
One thing I can say to this post is if you think she played favorites instead of talent than you must not know talent. You don’t win and go to state 3 times in 6 years because you play favorites instead of talent. Maybe your talent wasn’t as good as your mom thought it was!
Thank you coach! We’ve watched you coach through many successful seasons. The time and emotion put into the job of coaching is something very few people truly understand. Thank you for sacrificing both. Brenham will always be thankful!
Coach Yeager put Brenham Volleyball on the map! Go Cubs!
What is her overall record in the 22? seasons at Brenham? Pretty successful over now a second generation of kids, sounds like.
Sounds like she has the ability to create winners with whatever skill sets she has to work with in each given group.
Isn’t that the definition of a good coach?
Thank you Coach Yeager for all your hard work and dedication. No one has put the kind of hours and heart you did into your program. Were you tough? Absolutely! But you made winners out of the girls and prepared many for when they get the really tough coaches in college! BISD needs to get rid of the no cut policy, for Varsity especially.
Again, thank you for all you have done for Brenham Volleyball!
Glad she’s gone. She’s treated so many of her athletes terrible and is not what a coach looks like.
That’s the problem with the school now. Parents think there kids need to be treated like babies. Hope no one wants to play in college. If you can’t play you don’t. Raise strong kids not babies
So long to the hard nosed coaching style! Time to hire some coach from Charmin Ultra Soft Academy. Headed in the wrong direction overall.
Dumb decision. Cub nation is very upset!!!!!!!!!!!
Very disappointing day for Brenham Volleyball.
