TRIAL UNDERWAY FOR MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING DPS TROOPER

(Brazos Co. Jail)
Trial proceedings began this (Monday) morning in Brazos County for a man accused of shooting and killing a DPS trooper in Freestone County.
37-year-old Dabrett Black of Mount Sylvan is charged with Capital Murder of a Peace Officer. He is accused of opening fire on Trooper Damon Allen with a rifle during a traffic stop on I-45, south of Fairfield, on Thanksgiving Day in 2017.
Black was arrested after an extensive search ended in Waller County on FM 1488, between Hempstead and Prairie View.
If convicted, Black faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty after making an agreement with the defense, which in exchange waives Black’s insanity defense.
In 2019, a judge granted a defense motion moving the trial from Fairfield to Bryan.
The trial is expected to last at least one week.
