The Hempstead ISD Board of Trustees has named their lone finalist to become the District’s next superintendent.

The lone finalist is current Greenville ISD Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership Herbert O’Neil.

O’Neil is no stranger to Waller County. He earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and his master’s degree in educational administration from Prairie View A&M University.

O’Neil then began his career in education with Waller ISD as an English teacher, and coach before later becoming an assistant principal.

Throughout his career, O’Neil has served as a campus principal at the intermediate, middle, and high school levels. He has also been a central office administrator in human resources and academics.

The Hempstead School Board began searching for a new superintendent back in January after reaching a separation agreement with the previous superintendent, Dr. Angela Gutsch.

Throughout the process, the Board’s search firm, KBS Law Group, conducted a survey of staff and community members. They also held a community forum to hear opinions about the desired characteristics and qualifications of the next Superintendent.

After receiving numerous applications and interviewing many qualified candidates, O’Neil was chosen by the Board for the position.

Texas law requires a 21-day waiting period after naming the lone finalist before the Superintendent can be officially named. The Board anticipates meeting in April to officially name O’ Neil as the new Superintendent and approve his contract.
