HISTORIC HOME IN OLD WASHINGTON DESTROYED IN FIRE

  

A historic home in Washington County was destroyed Monday afternoon in a fire.

The fire was initially reported just after 4:30 p.m. in the 18000 block of FM 2726 in Old Washington, at a two-story home built around the 1880s.

Responding agencies included the Washington, Meyersville, Chappell Hill, Salem, Berlin and Navasota Volunteer Fire Departments.  A CERT team also responded to provide rehab operations for firefighters, who remained at the scene until around 10 p.m.

According to Melissa Boenker, whose husband’s grandparents lived in the home for over 20 years, the land was originally part of the Old 300 settlement by Amos Gates, where he is buried today.  The home served as the headquarters of Tom J. Moore Cattle Company for several years, and was most recently undergoing repairs from the May 2020 storms.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
