DESIGN WORK FOR BURTON ISD BOND PROJECT CLOSE TO COMPLETION

Officials with the Burton ISD bond project say design work is nearly complete.
Antonio Naylor, President of Reliance Architecture, told the Burton School Board on Monday that the firm expects to wrap up design and development by the first week of June for the improvements included in the $43.8 million bond passed in November.
Site work is scheduled to take place in August or September, with construction beginning this November.
In action items, the board selected Musco Sports Lighting, LLC as the vendor to provide the lighting for the bond projects, approved a purchase agreement with the company, and gave Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy authority to make any necessary revisions on behalf of the board and in accordance with the accepted terms. The budgeted amount for the purchase was $425,000, but the bid came in lower at $407,000.
The board also approved the purchase of a new baseball scoreboard for $29,652. Citizens State Bank has agreed to reimburse Burton ISD for the cost of the scoreboard, paying $10,000 a year over three years.
Campus security was also discussed by the board. Dr. Kennedy referenced the recent fatal stabbing at Belton High School and said she will meet with the Texas Association of School Boards to see if the district is able to make any changes to current policy for extra protection for students.
Also on Monday, the board:
- Recognized Eli Saunders for his 7th place finish at the state powerlifting meet in Abilene in March.
- Approved a resolution declaring surplus property and allowing the superintendent to sell or dispose of the property. Kennedy said four portable buildings, two scoreboards, two sets of bleachers, a press box and athletic field lights have been set as surplus, and McDade ISD is interested in purchasing items.
- Approved changes to the district’s dyslexia plan. Dyslexia assessments will now go through special education rather than general education, and the screening areas for kindergarten and 1st grade students were adjusted.
