BRENHAM CUBS BEAT PFLUGERVILLE HENDRICKSON 5-4 TO TAKE A 1-0 SERIES LEAD
BRENHAM CUBS 5 PFLUGERVILLE HENDRICKSON HAWKS 4
It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but it was still a win as the Brenham Cubs beat Pflugerville Hendrickson 5-4 last (Thursday) night.
Brenham got on the board in the second inning. Cade Warmke drew a one out walk, and then came around to score on an RBI double by Cayden Shields to make it 1-0 Cubs.
The Hawks got three of their runs in the bottom of the second. Hendrickson had the bases loaded with two outs. D.J. Pinkerton hit a single to left that scored one run. Brenham Leftfielder Hayden Hupe misplayed the ball and two more runs came across to make it 3-1 Hawks.
The Cubs would cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning. Rylan Wooten lead off the inning with a double. Jacob Mabie and Lane Sparks followed with back-to-back walks. Mason Lampe then brought home Wooten with a sacrifice fly.
In the sixth inning, Ethan Jezierski led off with a single. Later in the inning, Gunner Gee hit a ground ball to third. The Hawks got Gee at first. However, as Jezierski tried to advance to third, Hawks First Baseman Cooper Nunez overthrew third base, allowing Jezierski to come home and score to tie the game 3-3.
The Cubs finally went in front again in the top of the 7th inning. Rylan Wooten reached on a throwing error by Hawks Third Baseman Alex Jimenez. Mabie and Lampe walked to load the bases for Jezierski. Jezierski hit a ground ball to short, and beat out an infield hit. The throw from Hawks Shortstop Michael Martinez went over the first baseman's head allowing Rylan Wooten and courtesy runner Colin Schaper to give the Cubs a 5-3 lead.
Hendrickson got one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jayden Rodriguez struck out, but while making the throw to complete the play, Brenham Catcher Jacob Mabie over threw first base and it went down into the right field corner. Rodriguez put on a burst of speed and circled the bases to cut the lead to 5-4.
Shields then got Avery Hernandez to line out to Gunner Gee to end the game.
