An assistant principal at Alton Elementary School has been named Brenham ISD’s new Federal Programs Coordinator.

The school district today (Thursday) announced that Mary Gold would move to the position, which is responsible for coordinating the district’s state and federal special programs, including state and federal fiscal budget management and grant administration.

Gold has 11 years of administrative experience and collectively 30 years of experience in education.  She has served as an assistant principal for Brenham Middle School, Brenham Elementary School, and most recently Alton Elementary School.

Gold’s primary duties will consist of evaluating all federal legislation, projects and programs for the grant, entitlement and allocation opportunities relevant to the needs of the district and making recommendations regarding participation.  She will monitor grant-funded programs and their expenditures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines and that programs are cost-effective and managed wisely.

Gold said it has been an honor to serve as an assistant principal, and looks forward to “serving our district, as well as working with all the campuses in this new role.”

  1. Sounds like a lot of people here don’t understand how a grant works… Or taxes for that matter. If you’re criticizing this hire, assuming she’s effective, then you’re criticizing yourself while complaining about taxes. Classic pot calling kettle black thing going on.

  2. Is it just me or doesn’t it sound like the district is robbing Peter to pay Paul. Use the funds earmarked for what they are designated to be used for!! If all government entities were held to the same accountability as individuals are we might not have so many problems!

  3. Mrs Gold will be perfect for this job. Happy for her and our district to have a point person for this. Our district is growing and this is needed.

    1. M Robinson, “our district is growing” was one of the oft used phrases in the recent bond election. However when reviewing the facts on the Texas Education Agency’s website which are available to anyone, that statement is just NOT true. Listed below are the student enrollment numbers for the last 10 years at BISD.
      2020 -2021 4944 students
      2019 -2020 5085 students
      2018 – 2019 5048 students
      2017 – 2018 5013 students
      2016 – 2017 4950 students
      2015 – 2016 4952 students
      2014 – 2015 4866 students
      2013- 2014 4874 students
      2012 – 2013 4943 students.

  4. Welcome to state govt!! This happens all the time at the state school. No raises for the lowly folks, but lots of high paying jobs for the ones already getting a good salary. there is one department that hired 5 extra people to do what 5 people were doing before! it’s crazy.

  5. I have no issue with Mrs. Gold, I am sure she is a great person. However we are adding yet another central office position! How big does that office have to get before the tax payers have had enough?

    1. It sounds like her job is to find federal grant money that’s worth applying for, then make sure that we don’t get into hot water after we take the money like the City did with its water intake project. If the job is done well then I’d think that it should pay for itself and then some by bringing our federal tax dollars back home from Washington DC. I don’t see how that would be controversial.

  6. Can someone explain why we are taking all these people who have administrative type jobs and creating new positions? I guess that’s part of the reason we need big fancy schools built…so we can have nice offices for these folks. Of course I’m just a dumb ole tax payer…what do I know?

  7. Curious to know where all of the money is coming from to fund these new positions. The positions these people are vacating have to be filled. Administration is spending money like the wallet is overflowing. Will teachers and staff be getting a raise??!!

    1. Question…have you received your tax statement? It’s through the roof. They’re paying for it like all government institutions…just raise taxes!! They don’t have to prove success…just raise taxes. By the way…being connected and depending on Federal Programs is another huge problem. As Had Enough said, we’re not attacking Ms Gold personally…we’re frustrated with the institution she works for.

    2. I am dumbfounded about this as well. Especially since the teachers were told if they didn’t vote “yes” to the recently failed bond, that they would not be getting any raises due to that money coming from the maintenance fund. Now all of a sudden there have been at least three newly created, high salary positions. If the teachers do not get a raise, as threatened by administration, then there is a serious problem starting with the top!

      1. And since experience, dedication, and commitment hold no value to BISD…..just watch the out of towners leap frog on in to fill the open positions.

    3. Here’s the answer.

A little over a year ago, Brenham ISD (like all other school districts in Texas) received COVID relief money from the federal government thru the State of Texas. The amount BISD received was over $10,000,000. This was in addition to all of their funding from local taxes, state, and federal funding.

Then comes the bond election. The superintendent stated during several of his presentations to the community that if the bond did not pass, the money to correct the Title IX deficiencies would probably have to come from money planned for teacher raises. Even a current board member told me that in a conversation. This was nothing more than an underhanded attempt to get the district’s 600+ employees and their families to vote for the bond. This turned out to be a smokescreen, fake news, or a flat out lie.

Don’t forget that BISD was sitting on $10,000,000 that they could use for Title IX deficiencies.

As we all know the bond failed.

Well in addition to the new positions, the superintendent has signed off on:
-Allowing the new head football coach to buy all new uniforms,
-Renovation of the coaches offices in the Kruse Field House (which were good enough for the previous 2 coaches who both won a lot more games than the unproven new hire)
-Asking the board to approve $275,000 for new weights for the high school. Thankfully the Board of Trustees did not go along with this request. Just 3-4 years ago the district spent over $110,000 for new weights but I guess those were not good enough.
      – Lord knows what else

So in reality BISD has enough money to spend however they choose.

If the BISD staff doesn’t get AT LEAST a 5% raise, it will be a huge slap in the face to those who have gone above and beyond over the last 3 years to do their job. And an indication of how the administration feels about their importance/contribution in educating the students in our school district.
