FORMER CUBETTE BASKETBALL STANDOUT TO HOST YOUTH BASKETBALL CAMP

A former basketball standout at Brenham High School is returning home to host a free girls basketball camp.
The “Diamond in the Rough” basketball clinic is hosted by Velencia Kuykendall-Mason, a 2003 Brenham High School graduate and a two-time All-American and Hall of Honor member at Houston Baptist University. The camp for girls entering seventh and eighth grades will be held July 8th and 9th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) gym at 304 Kerr St.
Mason, who now owns and operates Gulf Coast Jewelz with her husband, Brian, says the camp goes through the fundamentals of basketball, but also focuses on the skills and life lessons taught by the sport to form the leaders of tomorrow.
Mason plans for the basketball camp to be an annual event. She is eager to “carry on the torch” and share what she has learned with younger generations.
Co-hosting the camp with Mason are Ravon Justice, head women’s basketball coach at Sam Houston State University, and Antreanna Brooks, assistant women’s basketball coach at Blinn College.
The camp is free, but pre-registration is required and spots are limited to 50 participants. Registration is available through the Gulf Coast Jewelz Facebook page.
