SUPREME COURT OVERTURNS ROE V. WADE; TEXAS SET TO BAN ABORTIONS

Texas is set to ban nearly all abortions in the state after today’s (Friday) U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned the 1973 decision of Roe v. Wade.

The 6-3 ruling ends constitutional protection for abortion and paves the way for individual states to set their own laws on the practice.

Last year, Texas legislators passed a law that would trigger 30 days after a decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.  The law makes abortions in Texas illegal unless the mother’s life is at risk.

Doctors who perform an abortion in violation of the law could face life in prison and fines up to $100,000; the law does not prosecute the person who undergoes a procedure to have an abortion.

Texas is one of 13 states that have “trigger laws” in place to ban abortions with today’s decision.  Roughly half of the states could outlaw or restrict abortions.
