Arch-Con Corporation took out an $8 million permit for construction of an Academy Sports + Outdoors at 1041 Nolan Street.  The Academy is part of the 51-acre Market Square development located between Market Street and Highway 290 that includes both residential and commercial properties.

Other projects that are expected to come to Market Square are Chick-Fil-A, Wendy’s, Hawthorn Suites and LaQuinta.  There is also the Villas at Market Square, a 170-unit multi-family development, and the Brenham Trails, a 49-unit apartment complex for seniors 55 and older.

Twelve new homes were permitted in November for $2,618,756.  So far this year, 178 new homes have been permitted for $30,856,488.

A total of 33 permits were taken out in November for $12,086,147.  In comparison to November 2021, 47 permits were issued for $11,438,280.

Through the month of November, the city has issued 414 permits for $65,364,096.  That outpaces the 398 permits through last November, but last year’s permit value to date was $88,811,157.

  1. Now if we can only entice Kroger…I love HEB, but hate the crowds and limited choices. A little competition is a good thing

    1. AMEN Nancy, I’d be so so glad if we were given more choices. I swear that HEB and Walmart go to each others stores and make available the same dad gum things the other one does. That, and their own brand is all ALL we have to choose from. Yet, I hear from others and by going myself, that there are a LOT of other brands and items available at the same stores, not to mention Kroger ALSO has good their own brand products. I love HEB and I don’t want any of those to lose their jobs because of less profit, but we NEED more competition for our grocery dollars. AND on another note, all this business complaining about the location of the new Academy store..I bet none of you complaining about the location won’t be willing to drive 45 minutes to go to a different one. Be happy we have one that is a reasonable choice to get to.

    2. Kroger is probably the most expensive grocery store you could shop at. It wouldn’t survive here.

      1. Kroger would thrive in Brenham. Maybe Brenham needs a few more people but I believe Kroger will be in Brenham within 8-10 years, possibly sooner.’

      1. 3reds, if you really went to any of the other HEB stores, within 45 minutes of our own store, you would know that we are being shorted in our choices at our own store. I have been driving to Elgin AND to Fairfield area to buy a particular brand of ready made tea that is NEVER available at our store. And to add insult to injury, you DO realize that we are paying a little bit more at OUR store for the same item thats available at these other stores. Not everyone desires or would go and notice the difference but I have noticed it over the last few YEARS…why we pay more, I don’t know because the HEB truck comes right down 290 going to stores in other towns. And, as an aside, the other stores have different Sale ads and when they advertise that special, they have it on the shelves, ready to be bought. If I didn’t use the pharmacy services at our local HEB, I don’t think I would ever go in there.

  2. Finally, an Academy in Brenham! Why it’s not on 36N (near all the sports venues) I’ll not know. Connections I guess.

    1. It’s business….you would have a quarter of the traffic vs 290. Location Location Location…

      1. Just Saying:
        My point exactly! Location, location
Academy might well DRAW some of the CONGESTION AWAY from the 36S/290 By-Pass area.
An Academy might well pull others in that direction and we start to get a balance of traffic.
You can continue on to Austin going around that way, too.

    2. It’s business….you would have a quarter of the traffic and potential customers vs 290. Location Location Location…

      1. Just Saying:
        My point exactly! Location, location
An Academy might well DRAW some of the TRAFFIC AWAY from the congested 36S/290 By-Pass area and
create an alternative location, location, location.
You can get around Brenham on your way to Austin that way, too.

    3. 36 may have 1/4 of the traffic that 290 constantly does business is all about location and the 290 location gives them access to many more potential customers.

    4. I suppose people go to the sports venues to watch sports and shopping areas when they are shopping.

    5. I have never ever seen an academy near “sports venues”. Theres much more to the idea of simply putting a store anywhere you want. Especially when there is $8+ million in costs, you wanna make sure as much amount of traffic possible sees it.
