BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL RECOGNIZES BMS STUDENT AUTHORS

Students in Ben Lewis' 6th grade class at Brenham
Middle School were recognized on Thursday by
Brenham City Councilmembers for authoring "The
American Experience".

The Brenham City Council on Thursday gave special recognition to a group of students at Brenham Middle School who are telling the stories of what it means to be an American.

Ben Lewis’ sixth grade social studies and gateway science class recently published the third volume of “The American Experience”.  The book features interviews conducted by the 37 student authors with citizens over the age of 60, U.S. immigrants and veterans.

Lewis said he started the project as a challenge to himself and his students to think more deeply about their own culture.  He said the interviews deserved to be heard by all.

The series of books has raised just under $4,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, which receives all of the proceeds.  Lewis’ class has also been recognized by U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul, who sent a congressional letter commending the students.

Several of the authors talked to the council about who they interviewed and what they learned.  One student, Corbin Brooks, discussed his interview with his grandfather who served in the Navy.

Copies of the book can be purchased by contacting Lewis at blewis@brenhamk-12.net or any student in the class, as well as on Amazon.  Signed copies are available by scheduling an appointment to pick up a book.
