STANDOFF IN FAYETTE CO. ENDS WITH SUBJECT IN CUSTODY
A Cedar Park man was taken into custody Friday afternoon in Fayette County, following a lengthy standoff with authorities.
Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that Deputy Herman Olvera responded to a call on Blaschke Road near Schulenburg about a suspicious vehicle that had driven onto the caller’s property and struck a tree before driving back to the road and stopping.
Upon contact, the driver, who was not named in the sheriff’s report, refused to speak with Deputy Olvera or leave the vehicle. The subject told the deputy that he was in the process of using drugs and that he had weapons in the vehicle. He then fled in the vehicle into a nearby pasture, where a standoff ensued while additional units arrived on scene and set up a perimeter.
Korenek says the subject refused to exit the vehicle or speak with deputies, periodically moving the vehicle around within the pasture, honking the horn and openly smoking an unknown substance.
Responding agencies made several attempts to negotiate with the subject, who eventually left the vehicle but still refused to comply with orders. He then attempted to re-enter the vehicle, prompting the deployment of Fayette County K-9 Officer Kolt. Kolt and deputies then took the man into custody.
The man was transported to a hospital in Austin for medical treatment. Korenek says the sheriff’s office will issue arrest warrants.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by DPS Troopers, the Schulenburg Police Department and members of the Austin County Regional Special Response Team.
