PURSUIT OF BASTROP CO. MURDER SUSPECT ENDS IN NAVASOTA
A murder suspect wanted in Bastrop County is in custody at the hospital following a high-speed chase Wednesday that traveled through Brazos County and ended in Navasota.
The suspect was identified by FOX 7 in Austin as 22-year-old Raul Anthony Caballero, who is being treated for an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Caballero is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend, 19-year-old Sofia Vera, and stealing her car and cell phone.
Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, Bryan police assisted several agencies in the pursuit at Highway 6 and Harvey Mitchell Parkway. The pursuit continued southbound until the suspect vehicle crashed near the intersection of Highway 6 and Robert Road in Navasota. Police say the vehicle collided with an SUV and was then struck by a patrol unit, causing it to crash into a median between the highway and railroad tracks.
A SWAT team made contact at the crash scene with the suspect, who was unconscious and injured with a gunshot wound. He was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
According to the report from FOX 7, Caballero and Vera lived together in College Station, but her parents live in Bastrop County.
Law enforcement agencies that assisted in the chase included the Bryan Police Department, DPS, College Station Police Department, Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, Navasota Police Department and Grimes County Sheriff’s Office.
