A drag show brought numerous residents into downtown Brenham on Saturday, both in support of and opposition to the event.

The Drag Brunch at Floyd’s Lounge sold out both of its late morning and early afternoon performances.   Many people gathered outside the business, with some carrying Pride flags while others held signs critical of the drag show.

Among those attending the event were the Brenham PFLAG chapter and the Pride Community Center.  Josh Tutt, board president of the Pride Community Center, said he was thrilled that an event like this was held in Brenham so that more people can learn about drag entertainment and the LGBTQ+ community.

Floyd’s co-owner Pete Simpson said prior to the drag show that the event would feature three individuals in women’s clothing who would lip sync songs and perform comedy.  He said the private, ticketed event was restricted to guests over 18 and would not include any nudity, lingerie, stripping or touching from the performers or attendees.

A prayer group of citizens and local church representatives met on the courthouse square as the event took place.  Matt Sweeney, lead pastor for Grace Community Fellowship and a member of Texas Church Leaders, said the gathering was meant to spread God’s message while “pushing back the darkness.”

Several officers from the Brenham Police Department were onsite to monitor activities outside Floyd’s, and Baylor Street was blocked off in front of the business.  Police Chief Ron Parker said approximately 70 guests attended the event, with the number of protestors and demonstrators on both sides numbering close to 100.  He said activities remained peaceful, as no arrests or disturbances took place.
