A drag show brought numerous residents into downtown Brenham on Saturday, both in support of and opposition to the event.
The Drag Brunch at Floyd’s Lounge sold out both of its late morning and early afternoon performances. Many people gathered outside the business, with some carrying Pride flags while others held signs critical of the drag show.
Among those attending the event were the Brenham PFLAG chapter and the Pride Community Center. Josh Tutt, board president of the Pride Community Center, said he was thrilled that an event like this was held in Brenham so that more people can learn about drag entertainment and the LGBTQ+ community.

Floyd’s co-owner Pete Simpson said prior to the drag show that the event would feature three individuals in women’s clothing who would lip sync songs and perform comedy. He said the private, ticketed event was restricted to guests over 18 and would not include any nudity, lingerie, stripping or touching from the performers or attendees.
A prayer group of citizens and local church representatives met on the courthouse square as the event took place. Matt Sweeney, lead pastor for Grace Community Fellowship and a member of Texas Church Leaders, said the gathering was meant to spread God’s message while “pushing back the darkness.”
Several officers from the Brenham Police Department were onsite to monitor activities outside Floyd’s, and Baylor Street was blocked off in front of the business. Police Chief Ron Parker said approximately 70 guests attended the event, with the number of protestors and demonstrators on both sides numbering close to 100. He said activities remained peaceful, as no arrests or disturbances took place.
Did anyone mention or show up outside of legends when they did 2 that i know of Chippendales shows? NO… churches where were you then? I’m a Christian and honestly there were so many people who said they BELIEVE int he words that sure were judgmental and hateful… Yall talk about the kids and how this was about protecting them, and GODS country. well take a look in the mirror and reflect. did yall go to church on Sunday and ask for forgiveness for judging them and teaching your kids how to judge others?
I am a long time resident of this small town atmosphere. I can recall hearing and my parents were approached to join Swinger Lifestyle that was going on in Brenham as far back as the 70’s. My parent’s were so upset and appalled. There has for most of my life I have known of a good size homosexual presence in Brenham for 40 or so years could have been more. There is a gambling parlor that I was invited to in the past year. I did not have any interest in gambling especially a illegal gambling area. I am not talking about Bingo! How many establishments are there that make a lot of money from serving beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages. I doubt there is a lot of limitations on how much is sold to a individual. I feel that even though I was not an attendee of the show at Floyd’s they seemed to handle it in a manner that it was limited to legal aged ticket holders and brunch was included. Nobody was forced to go. It was not being held at an outdoor event space. Brenham is not really changing it is growing. It is located between two major cities and there is more groth than I personally like. Yet we are getting business a lot of people want. A lot of people complain about no parking downtown. I say go to your new big chain eateries that are coming. Leaves me space to get to my favorite places downtown. As far as the sinners in this area. I think they will be judged when they meet or maker.
Are these Christian groups protesting priests at the Catholic Churches? Seems like they do a lot more harm than a drag show at a private business
Exactly.
I have not read about or seen on the television/internet news the case of a drag show performer sexually molesting children, but it is done by church leaders, youth pastors, and others involved in many different churches of all denominations. It would be safer to send your kids to a drag show story time every Sunday, to losten to a person read a book, than a church, as per the data.
I find it amazing that this whole thing would have probably not have been really noticed or cared about by most people.
It wasn’t until some over zealous religious type folks made a big deal about it.
First off, it’s none of their business at all. They should have been taught to mind their own business when they were a child.
Secondly, Floyd’s has received so much free publicity for this event,(most of it good), that they will probably do more shows in the future. Live, and let live. Sweep your own doorstep first, as they say.
I am sure those who seek to degrade righteousness and dismantle culture would love us to “mind our own business.” Sorry, but that’s not how it works. We have a say on what is allowed in our society and we will use that voice to stand for what is right. You seem to misunderstand Christ, so allow me to explain. Jesus told His disciples to shake the dust from their feet when a town rejected the Truth. This was literally a curse in the culture of Hebrew antiquity. He hung out with sinners, but did not join in their sin. In fact, He commanded them to repent of their evil ways. So, please do not twist the nature of Christ to fit your political agenda or base desires.
If you don’t like something, don’t go. Simple. I don’t like gun shows, I don’t go to those. I don’t think Jesus would have said to move back where you came from. What is the harm in dressing up and putting on a show? People need to stop with the hate and mind their own business.
Exactly Paula!
What’s so different about this event than the old time All Male Weddings and All Male Beauty Pageants that used to be big entertainment back in the 50s and 60s?
Where was the confusion of one’s sex and sexual indulgence? Perhaps it is your non-Christian thoughts, not that of others.
As Texans sit by and watch Texas being completely changed from all of California and left thinking attitudes invade we are made fun of for expressing our values. Austin has overflowed to Bastrop, Roundrock, Georgetown and is making its way to Brenham. Along with this are some wonderful people that I welcome. But also bring a smug attitude and half smile that I feel like they think we are a joke. We are not a joke. We love God. We care deeply about our children an our seniors. We don’t like being mocked. You move here to take advantage of opportunity here for a better life and try to change it everyday. So take your Land Rover and move back to where you came because you don’t belong here. Citizens of Brenham you better think hard about who you vote for in these upcoming elections. Your future taxes depends on it and future housing. …Another thing to think about. We love our beer but look around, how many bars do we need? All I hear is police sirens. Brenham citizens think twice about our liberal school board members and city council. Time for wisdom.
We live a world that is all too short on tolerance.
Goes both ways . People are entitled to their beliefs , that’s not intolerance .
Nothing wrong with belief, as it doesn’t infringe on others’ beliefs. That is when it becomes intolerance.
Purposely incendiary event held in God’s country…. They are honestly lucky my grandparents aren’t still alive. We have grown soft.
In my opinion, watching a show eating a brunch, is not my thing, regardless of who is performing.
Now, a Dinner Theatre, that is usually always a good time.
Watching men dressed as women, whilst they sing and dance, is not really my cup of tea, but it was always entertaining when Bugs Bunny did it, or the old show Busom Buddies, or the classic movie “Some Like it Hot”, with Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis.
I hope everyone had a nice day, on both sides.
Great points! We all (society as a whole) has a very short memory. We forget so many things and only focus on the now.
It is now clear that so many folks overreacted. Way to go Floyd’s!
Signed,
Christian, married woman
Ok Christian, I read the gospels and the word of the one we serve. I have yet to find where it’s ok to sow confusion of ones sex, to indulge in one sexuality in any form knowingly creating stumbling blocks for little ones. That’s not love and it’s not love to affirm mental illness either. But the safety of lukewarm water is appealing in this country now. With it, you get to claim enlightenment and a modern open mind while dressing Jesus up in drag and referring to him as ze of zur.
True words Eric. Well put. Thank you.
I’ve never seen anyone dress Jesus in drag. Try sticking to reality.
We are with you brother!
I’m sure there were some who were against the drag show, I wasn’t interested in it, so it didn’t bother me.
I know 2 people that went said that it was very interesting and they had lots of laughs in a good way.
“Live and let live” does not work when there is an interest group actively seeking to dismantle your culture and values. Actively fight back or passively watch your society degenerate into depravity.
Agreed Brenhamite! I’m sure many of these so called Christians have watched MASH and had a good laugh at Jamie Farr dressed in drag as the character Klinger as well. They probably also just gasped at that same fact that it proves their hypocrisy! I am born and raised in Brenham and in the photos of the protesters I didn’t recognize any of them, also the Pastors associated with this protest are not native Brenhamites either. If you don’t agree with what Floyds did then by all means don’t go there and enjoy a glass of wine and good company. That’s the whole thing it is your choice and I’m sure they won’t miss your business in the least bit. As for one of the protesters that was a past owner of a billiard hall that I hear was irate over the show, you promoted consumption of alchohol and allowed gambling in your establishment so maybe take a long look in the mirror.
