BURTON TO CELEBRATE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF TEXAS RANGERS’ FOUNDING SATURDAY AT TEXAS RANGER DAY

The history and legacy of the Texas Rangers will be honored tomorrow (Saturday) in Burton at the 12th Annual Texas Ranger Day.

A full day's worth of activities will be offered in commemoration of the deeds of famous Ranger Leander McNelly, as well as all Rangers.

Tom Whitesides, an organizer of the event, says this year is the bicentennial of the founding of the Texas Rangers, which makes the observation all the more reason to celebrate.

After the opening ceremony at 10 a.m., festivities run from noon to 5 p.m.  They include historical reenactments from the Legends of the Texas Rangers and the Old West Rangers, folk life demonstrations, mule driven buggy rides, music from Kountry Chick DJ, tours of the Burton Railroad Depot and Burton Cotton Gin, the Annie Maud Avis Memorial Fajita and Bean Cook-off, and the Lil Mr. and Miss Ranger Contest.

Guests also have the opportunity for a small fee to swear out a warrant for a Ranger to “arrest” someone and have them take part in a public trial conducted by Judge Hang ‘em High.  Proceeds from the “frontier justice”, and from all other activities, benefit the Burton Heritage Society and its efforts to restore the historic Mt. Zion Chapel.

Team entry fees for cookers in the fajita and bean cook-off are waived.  Meal tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for kids 6-10.  General admission is free.

Steph Jarvis of the Burton Heritage Society says the event is a fun time where children can learn a lot about history.
