MCCAUL VOTES FOR THE PARENTS BILL OF RIGHTS ACT

  

Texas Congressman Michael McCaul joined fellow Republicans in voting for House Resolution 5, otherwise known as the Parents Bill of Rights Act, which he also co-sponsored. 

According to a press release from McCaul’s office, “the Parents Bill of Rights ensures parents are told what their children are being taught, have the opportunity to speak to their children’s teachers, can protect their children’s privacy, and can keep their children safe.”

The bill also "promotes transparency by ensuring parents can see school budgets and spending."

McCaul said in a statement that he is proud to pass the legislation to ensure parents have a prominent voice in determining what their kids are being taught

The legislation passed by a vote of 213 to 208 along a mostly party-line vote. However, five Republicans crossed party lines and joined the Democrats in voting against the bill.

Democrats argue that the bill does nothing to increase parental engagement and inserts the federal government into schools.  They say that it will also target the LGBT community, censor teachers, and lead to book banning.

The Parents Bill of Rights now goes to the Senate, where it faces an uncertain future.  The Biden Administration does not support it.
