Susan Cates

Brenham’s Director of Economic Development has resigned, effective immediately.

Susan Cates, who has been Director of Economic Development for the City of Brenham since January of 2019, turned in her letter of resignation this (Monday) morning.

City Manager Carolyn Miller says that Cates resigned to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.  Miller says that due to the sensitivity of Cate’s position, her departure is effective immediately.

  1. “Miller says that due to the sensitivity of Cate’s position, her departure is effective immediately. ”
    What does this mean????

      1. But why no two weeks notice? Most folks are usually allowed to provide a notice and give other coworkers what they were working on during that time period. Immediately, on a Monday?

    1. Because we are dealing with nonelected city positions (the city mgr and the economic development director) we are not entitled legally to know the details about this personnel matter. No different than any nonpublic business. I hope that everyone wishes only the best for Susan Cates. She was brought into her position by the prior CMgr who was not the most truthful person on the earth. Yet she did a GREAT job. She did her best to mend fences and proved that she understood what it takes to convince businesses to locate in Brenham. And, yes Kirk Hanath, that includes monetary incentives like discounts on sales taxes and property taxes for a few years. We are competing with other Brenhams for their business. How many of you parents would love for your children to come back home and raise their family here? That won’t happen if there are no jobs for them, it is as simple as that.

Susan, if you read this, I was not your biggest fan at first but now I wish you the best and wherever you end up I know that you will be a valuable asset.
