Tuesday.
Burton’s new mayor and re-elected city councilmembers were sworn in during the council’s meeting on Tuesday.
Karen Buck defeated David Zajicek in the May 6th election for the mayor’s seat. Upon being sworn in, Buck thanked Zajicek, who served as mayor from May 2017 to March 2022, and Nathan Kalkhake, who acted as mayor pro tem, for their leadership in the position.
Also receiving the oath of office were Jeff Eckhardt, who was re-elected after defeating challenger Peter Horn, and Paul McLaughlin, who was uncontested. Kalkhake also did not have an opponent, but was not present Tuesday night to be sworn in.
After canvassing election returns, the council chose to have Kalkhake remain as mayor pro tem.
Also on Tuesday, councilmembers approved the purchase of a new lift station and all required supplies and equipment for $28,725. Dustin Lozano, Burton’s utility contractor, said the lift station will be located near 13200 West Washington Street and will support future development. He said once parts are ordered, it should take two or three weeks for them to arrive.
In other action, the council:
- Approved the placement of signs indicating the prohibition of engine braking near the city limits on Spur 125, FM 390 and FM 1697.
- Authorized the mayor and all councilmembers as signers on all city bank accounts.
- Approved a resolution proclaiming May as Fair Housing Month in the City of Burton.
- Approved the temporary use of the alley on Block 31 as access to the Citizens State Bank drive-thru lanes during the remodeling of the bank building.
