John Pechacek went to the sheriff’s office on Wednesday to thank those who came to his aid on May 30th.
Fayette County Sheriff’s Lieutenant David Beyer said Pechacek was mowing grass when the bees attacked him. Beyer said the bees had a large hive in an empty travel trailer on the property; according to Beyer, the hive was found with a sizable amount of honey.
Sheriff’s deputies, Fayette County EMS and the La Grange Fire Department responded to the scene after the sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting that Pechacek was on the ground and being attacked by the swarm.
Deputy Joe Gonzales arrived on scene first and used a fire extinguisher to attempt to stop the bees from stinging Pechacek. Other personnel came shortly afterward and assisted in getting him away from the bees.
Pechacek was transported by EMS in critical condition to the Smithville Airport, where he was flown to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin.
Deputy Gonzales, EMS staff and a civilian were also stung several times and were treated and released from St. Mark’s Hospital in La Grange.
