‘CELEBRATE OUR SENIORS’ HITS 20-YEAR MILESTONE

The nonprofit Thomye Delle “Celebrate Our Seniors” program marked 20 years of giving thanks to Washington County senior citizens at festivities this past weekend in Brenham.

Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura (center) holds a
proclamation in recognition of the 20th anniversary
of the Celebrate Our Seniors program and
designating August 12, 2023 as Celebrate Our
Seniors Day.

Activities included the presentation of awards to local seniors for their service and commitment to the community, as well as a proclamation read on Saturday by Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura recognizing the 20th anniversary of the program and declaring the second Saturday in August as Celebrate Our Seniors Day.  The award presentations and Saturday’s appreciation gathering were the first since the 2020 COVID pandemic.

Veronica Ferguson-Maxie, co-founder of the “Celebrate Our Seniors” program, said this year’s focus was thanking all of those who have helped to make the program possible since its beginning in 2004.

The 2023 program honorees are the late Arthur McBride Sr. and Claudette Stewart.

As has been the practice for the last few years, Celebrate Our Seniors volunteers distributed more than 150 care packages over the weekend to senior citizens at homes and senior living facilities throughout Washington County.  Tre Maxie, fellow program co-founder, said he is grateful to be able to bring the celebration to the seniors.

Organizers gathered at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday for worship services and to thank the youth ministry for their support and involvement with the program.  They also recognized the descendants of Thomye Delle Jameson-Ferguson-Burnett, the driving force and namesake for the Celebrate Our Seniors program.
