A Washington County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant and now-former Precinct 3 Constable is looking to become the next sheriff.

David Blakey Jr. has announced he will seek the post currently held by Otto Hanak, who plans to retire upon the end of his current term in office next year.  Blakey will run as a Republican in the March 2024 primary.

Blakey’s law enforcement career spans over 35 years and consists of time in the Brenham Police Department, Burton Police Department, Bellville Police Department and Austin County Sheriff’s Office.  He is currently a patrol lieutenant for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and held the Precinct 3 Constable’s post since 2017.

Blakey says he is ready to enter a new stage of serving the public.

Over Blakey’s time with various agencies, his responsibilities and ranks have included jail, patrol, investigation, sergeant, lieutenant, and assistant and interim chief of police.  He has worked closely with all branches of law enforcement and with city, county, state and federal governments.

Blakey has over 3,500 hours of continuing education and holds a Master Peace Officer License, and is also a Law Enforcement and Firearms Instructor.  He has completed several advanced leadership courses such as the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association’s Texas Command College and advanced training for command in the Incident Command System through FEMA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  He is also a graduate of the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, including the Texas Constables Leadership College and the Command Staff Leadership Series.

Blakey wishes to build upon Hanak’s work at the sheriff’s office and believes his past experience and involvement will guide the office and help it become the best that it can be.

Since Blakey is seeking the elected position of sheriff, he has submitted his resignation as Precinct 3 Constable, in accordance with the Texas Constitution.  At this time, no other candidates have announced their intent to run for sheriff.

Blakey is a lifelong resident of Washington County and presently lives in the Rehburg community with his wife, Suzy.  They have a daughter, Caitlyn, with her husband Lathan Staal, and a son, Joshua Daniels, with his wife Marissa, all of Burton.  They also have four grandchildren.

The filing period for the primary ballot officially begins on November 11th.
