DIXIE MOTEL FEATURED IN TEXAS HIGHWAYS MAGAZINE

A historic – and newly renovated – motor court in Brenham has caught the eye of a notable travel publication.

Sarah Stopschinski holds up the January/February
issue of Texas Highways magazine, which features
the Dixie Motel on its list of places to stay in 2024.

The January/February issue of Texas Highways magazine features the Dixie Motel, 205 South Drumm Street, on its list of “Where to Stay in 2024”.  The list calls the destination “a stand-alone original born from the creativity and roll-up-your-sleeves hard work of Brenham couple Sarah and Karl Stopschinski.”

Sarah Stopschinski says the recognition has already led to lots of extra attention for them, and she is grateful that more people are beginning to notice what they have to offer.

After purchasing the Dixie Motel in 2014, Sarah and Karl decided to bring it back to life, tearing out the shag carpet and redoing the eight available rooms while keeping the original footprint of when the motel was first built in the 1950s.

Sarah describes the rooms as “simple” but with “high-end amenities”, including hand-made wood furniture, flat-screen televisions, pour-over coffee service, and even turntables with records.  Guests are provided re-usable water bottles, and a breakfast room with a retro icebox opens up to a courtyard where they can enjoy their meals while mingling with other visitors.

Since their renovations, Sarah says they have been consistently booked during regional events and activities, most recently the Round Top Winter Antiques Show, and have received over 100 5-star reviews.  While her plans aren’t finished yet, she is proud to have been able to take the Dixie Motel and make it something truly special.

Sarah is excited about their future and what is ahead for the city, calling Brenham “the new hot spot.”
