Estephany Avalos was recognized during the VFW’s dinner on February 2nd. She was presented a financial scholarship that will go toward her educational endeavors at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
This year’s Voice of Democracy contest focused on the theme of evaluating the greatest attributes of American democracy. In her essay, Estephany wrote on Americans’ access to free public education, the right of citizens to vote, and the protection of freedom of religion.
Estephany, who is the oldest of her two siblings, will be the first in her immediate family to attend a post-secondary institution. She is heavily involved in the AVID program as an executive secretary and plays multiple leadership roles in the Brenham High School Color Guard, Folklorico and National Honor Society.
