FORMER HEMPSTEAD MAYOR SENTENCED TO 6 YEARS IN PRISON
The former mayor of Hempstead has been sentenced to 6 years in prison.
A jury trial was held this week for Michael Shayne Wolfe, who was charged with Misapplication of Fiduciary Property, Greater than $300,000. After testimony from several witnesses, Wolfe changed his plea to guilty on Thursday and reached a plea agreement with the Waller County District Attorney’s Office.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Wolfe repeatedly approved invoices for road services from a local contracting firm, Glover Construction, without making sure the work was done or satisfactory. The District Attorney’s Office said in some instances, Wolfe approved invoices for roads that did not even exist.
Prosecutors said the total loss to the City of Hempstead for road services to Glover Construction was well over $2 million.
Wolfe’s 6-year sentence comes in exchange for his guilty plea and waiver of appellate rights. Under Texas law, he will be ineligible to hold public office again.
