ELECTION 2024: WASHINGTON CO. DISTRICT ATTORNEY

As early voting concludes today (Friday), KWHI is visiting with some of the many candidates appearing on the ballot for Washington County voters.

Derek Estep

Many eyes are on the race for district attorney, with the position coming open after Julie Renken’s decision to retire from the office after the end of her current term.  Renken has served as district attorney since 2013.

Seeking the office are Derek Estep and Dave Bunger, both Republicans.  The winner of the primary will not be opposed come November.

Estep began his career as a prosecutor in Eastland County before joining Renken’s staff in Washington County in 2013.  He currently serves as the district attorney’s office First Assistant District Attorney.  Estep is confident in the office’s current direction and feels his body of work prepares him well for this role.

Dave Bunger

Bunger worked in the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office as the chief felony prosecutor of the checks/financial crimes division.  He moved to Brenham in 2021 and later opened a private law practice.  Bunger says being a prosecutor is only part of the responsibility of a district attorney, and that being a leader is just as crucial.

Each candidate was asked about how their experience will translate to service as district attorney, the ethics of the position, obstacles facing the office and other questions.
