Powell has served in the Brenham Police Department since 1997, being named captain in 2015 and assistant chief last year.  He served as the department’s acting chief in the absence of Ron Parker, who is retiring

The promotion was the first order of business at today’s (Thursday) city council meeting.  Powell said he is thankful for the opportunity and looks forward to his new role.

City Manager Carolyn Miller said it is no surprise that Powell has quickly ascended through the ranks of the department, and that he is a valuable asset.  Mayor Atwood Kenjura said he appreciates everything Powell has done for the city, and that Powell’s record “speaks for itself.”

The city will hold off on searching for other candidates as it evaluates Powell.  Miller said the length of the interim period can vary, so there is not a strict timeline for when a permanent police chief is named.
