BRENHAM MAN CHARGED IN FATAL HIT-AND-RUN
A Brenham man has been charged for failing to stop and provide assistance after a hit-and-run accident resulting in the death of a pedestrian.
Brenham police say shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to the area near the intersection of Highway 36 South and Salem Road in reference to a man lying in the roadway.
Initial investigation revealed a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, and the vehicle fled from the scene. Witnesses stopped when they saw the victim and contacted law enforcement.
The victim, identified as 20-year-old Camilo Hernandez-Mendoza of Brenham, was pronounced dead at the scene by Washington County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Duane Houston.
The Brenham Police Criminal Investigation Division responded and was able to identify the suspect’s vehicle that was later located.
Investigators secured search and arrest warrants for the suspect, 42-year-old Jorge Piñon of Brenham. Police found Piñon around 8:15 p.m. Saturday at an area hotel and placed him under arrest for Failure to Render Aid (Collision Involving Death), a second degree felony.
Piñon remains in custody at the Washington County Jail.
