CPL. TOMMY KURIE RETIRING FROM BRENHAM PD AFTER 34 YEARS

The Brenham Police Department’s current longest-tenured officer is retiring.

The Brenham City Council recognized Corporal Tommy Kurie on Thursday, as he prepares to retire after 34 years with the police department.  Originally beginning his law enforcement career in 1985, Kurie served at the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office and then Sul Ross State University before joining the Brenham Police Department on May 1, 1990.

Brenham Police Chief Lloyd Powell spoke on Kurie’s behalf, as he could not attend the council meeting.  Powell said many people today do not know the police department without Kurie, and that while his prowess in catching burglars is well-documented over the years, he is better known as someone who “leads with his heart” and as “a big teddy bear.”

Powell called Kurie “a valuable asset to the City of Brenham and to this community.”  He also said Kurie wanted everyone to know that he is grateful for his many years with the city and appreciates everything the city and its residents have done for him.

Kurie’s official retirement date, according to Powell, is August 11th.

Mayor Atwood Kenjura said he has known Kurie for a long time and that his many kind gestures, whether it be buying children books or meals, go “a long way.”  He said the city will miss him and thanks him for his “great service.”
