BURTON PANTHERS DEFEAT HEMPSTEAD IN FIRST SCRIMMAGE

The Burton Panther Football Team traveled to Hempstead last (Thursday) night for their first scrimmage of the season.

The Panthers have a team that is still young, but did get some experience last season with seven starters returning on offense and eight starters returning on defense.

As the uncertainty continues as to when the team will be able to host the first game on their new field, Coach Jason Hodde told KWHI that it has been nice to be able to at least practice on their new turf surface.

As for the scrimmage, Burton was able to score three times, while keeping the Bobcats out of the end zone.

In evaluating his team's performance, Hodde said that he saw some really good things, and some bad things, but overall it went well for their first time out.

He particularly singled out the defense, who really tackled well in the scrimmage.

Burton has another scrimmage scheduled for next Friday at Leon High School at 6pm.

Among the things Hodde wants to see them work on in practice this week are: pre-snap penalties, fine tuning their blocking schemes, and polishing up some fundamental stuff. They will also be going back and looking at the film for other areas to work on.

The Panthers will open the season in two weeks on Friday, August 30, against the Holland Hornets at 7pm at Cub Stadium in Brenham.
