CUB FOOTBALL BRAVES HEAT IN FIRST SCRIMMAGE AGAINST NAVASOTA

The 2024 Brenham Cubs took on the Navasota Rattlers in a controlled scrimmage on Thursday at Cub Stadium. Due to participating in Spring Football, this is Brenham's only fall scrimmage before the start of the season.

Head Coach Danny Youngs gave his overall assessment of the team's performance.

The scrimmage started with each offense getting to run a number of plays.  Both the first and second teams received significant action in this portion of the scrimmage.

Later in the scrimmage, the Cubs and Rattlers played two timed 12 minute quarters.  The Cubs moved the ball well on offense behind Sr. QB Jordan Harvey and Soph. running back Jakoby Dixon .  Other standouts on offense during the scrimmage were running back Cartelle Brown and wide receivers Chris Guidry and Deontae Martin.

The only scoring in the timed quarters went to Jakoby Dixon who scored on a run from 2 yards out.  The final score of the timed portion was 7-0 Cubs.

Brenham also scored on a 75-yard touchdown run by backup QB Xyran Upshaw, and a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Harvey to Trae Bowers.

Coach Youngs said that there was a lot to like on the offense, but there is more they need to work on.

On defense, Leedrick Walker Jr and Quincy Adams combined to force a Rattler fumble.  Walker Jr. made the hit and Adams recovered the ball.  The Cub front seven were aggressive all night with Juniors Braeden Gandy and Caleb Espinoza both recording sacks.

The defense continues to be a work-in-progress with several new starters this year. Youngs said that they played really hard in the scrimmage, but there were still things that need to be corrected.

On Special teams Soph. Bleu Cinega made an extra point and missed a 43 yard FG attempt.  Junior Landon Zelenka handled the punting duties.

Coach Youngs also gave credit to Navasota, who are in their first season under new head coach Trey Allen, with being a quality opponent.

The Cubs are one week away from their season opener. They travel to Huntsville next Friday, August 30, at 7pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm.

Coach Youngs and members of the Cubs will also be joining us this Monday night on the Brenham Sportsline beginning at 5:35pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.

Special thanks to Michael Groves, who contributed to the story.
